The Words From Forest Counter Chair is from the Words From Forest Series. There are six coffee tables in this series available in different heights, sizes and polyurethane finishes. Trees are like a small universe. Even a single trunk can have vertical grain, knots, heartwood, and sapwood, and is surprisingly rich in expression. However, it is undeniable that we have been so focused on the uniformity of straight grain with no knots that we have painted over the individuality and ignored the beauty of nature’s formations. Only 25% to 35% of a log is used as furniture. Because of our misplaced sense of beauty and rationalism, we have failed to fully utilize the blessings of the forest. In 2001, Toshimitsu Sasaki took on the challenge of creating furniture with “knots” as the main feature, based on advanced craftsmanship. Toshimitsu Sasaki often worked on design development for major Japanese furniture manufacturers, and in 1988 his “Origin” bamboo and metal chair was exhibited at the Milan Furniture Fair, where it was much talked about. His involvement in Hida Sangyo’s design development began in 1987.
