Standard SP Chair

Description

The Standard SP Chair is offered with a seat and backrest in wood or as the model Standard SP in ASA plastic. Chairs take the most stress on their back legs, where they bear the weight of the user’s upper body. The engineer and designer illustrated this simple insight in the distinctive design for the Standard chair: while steel tubing suffices for the front legs, since they bear a relatively light load, the back legs are made of voluminous hollow sections that transfer the primary stress to the floor.
The 1934 model was introduced as Chair No. 4, since it had been preceded by three prototypes; further versions continued to be developed under the name ‘Standard’.

The Standard Collection was designed by French designer, architect and engineer Jean Prouvé. Prouvé’s work encompasses a wide range of objects. The list includes a letter opener, door and window fittings, lighting and furniture, façade elements, prefabricated houses, modular building systems, large exhibition structures – essentially, almost anything that is suited to industrial production methods.
In close cooperation with the Prouvé family, Vitra began in 2002 to issue re-editions of designs by this great French constructeur.
