Description
The world-famous Mushroom® (F560) by Pierre Paulin is an armchair for all generations. Part of the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Sensitive yet strong design. Art that is always comfortable.
Pierre Paulin’s first collaboration with Artifort, the Mushroom® Chair, marks a significant milestone in furniture design. It was the first design to fully conceal its structural elements within a single, sculptural form. A tubular metal frame, shaped into interconnected circular forms, is padded with foam and covered in stretch fabric—an innovative approach at the time.
Paulin initially experimented with swimsuit fabrics before Artifort’s Harry Wagemans sourced a durable, elastic upholstery material. According to Paulin, the Mushroom® Chair was “economically, mechanically, financially…the best seat I have created.”.
The Mushroom Chair is more than just a piece of furniture; it is a tangible manifesto of the modernist ideals of the 1960s — playful, comfortable, and groundbreaking in both form and use of material.
